Philippines SLM Members Retreat

Members of Cebu and Toledo Street Levels came together for a weekend retreat in the mountains. We had the extra blessing of having leadership from the US Street Levels joun us too! Friday evening was spent eating together, and hearing from Pastor Tim about how to live out the call of God and not an unfinished life – missing the opportunities we have to serve and live for Jesus.

Saturday included more teaching and discussion about what it means to truly follow Jesus. A lot of time was spent digging into what the Bible says, and finding the practical application to our lives.

We got to enjoy each other’s company through good conversation, friendly competition on the basketball court, and taking in the beautiful scenery.

Bohol pop-up & more

A few of the Cebu Island SLM members joined with the American team and we all went to Bohol together. We spent a day walking around Tagbilaran City with invitations to a pop-up Bible study that evening. We have hosted these Bible studies before, and were eager to see who would show up this time. We met at a coffee shop right across the street from the University of Bohol and had a great evening getting to know each other and studying Gods word together.

The next day, we helped host a youth leader summit – for 16-24 year olds who want to know what it means to really follow Jesus and serve their local churches. It was a good day of teaching and small group discussion, and new friendships formed.

Looking forward to the next time we get to visit Bohol!

“DANGEROUS EXPECTATIONS” Summit

Everyone has assumptions about God. Things we think are true about Him, or actions we expect He will take. If we hold tight to these expectations, we will miss out on knowing the real, true God. Instead, we need to know what the Bible says is true of God and let that shape our beliefs.

During this ONE DAY SUMMIT, we will discuss four major expectations people have and what the Bible says about them:

  • I want God to save everyone automatically
  • I want to find happiness in the world
  • I want God to fix my life without touching anything
  • I want God to love me by affirming my decisions

The goal is to discover more of who God is so that we can pursue Him rightly and not waste our lives caught up in worshipping a false, non-existent version of Him.

WHAT IS A SUMMIT?

A Street Level Ministries summit is a day event where we take a step away from the normal routine and focus on a topic we believe is important in our walk with God. There will be worship, Bible teaching, small group discussion, as well as time to hang out and get to know each other better.

There will be a mix of people from the Cebu, Toledo, and U.S. SLM groups.

EVENT DETAILS:

November 28: Friday evening members only

November 29: 9AM-4PM Summit @ Street Level Ministries Cebu City Space

Toledo Hang Out

We spent some extra time in Toledo this week, so we used the time to give away some free coffee and lemonade in front of Consolatrix College during the day. Later that evening we opened up the Toledo SLM Space to hang out, play games, eat pizza, and laugh at some charades. We will be doing a similar hang out on August 15 in Cebu City!

SLM Cebu City

As the semester came to an end, we had a chill evening of board games to celebrate another school year complete. We played all the favorites like Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride. We even held a mini paper football tournament. Stay tuned for our upcoming game night to kickoff the next semester!

A few weeks ago, after we finished up going through Colossians, we watched the film “The Insanity of God” which is an intense and inspiring look at believers in persecution.

We are currently about halfway through a series called “Follow Me” where each week we are taking an in depth look at what it really means to follow Jesus – with biblical teaching and small group discussions. If you’d like to join us, these weekly meetings are open to anyone 18-25 years old. We meet WEDNESDAYS at 6PM (and we have dinner together too).

We also produce Word on the Street magazine – a Christian magazine designed for university students. Recently, one of our members got it approved to be added to the UC Main library!

Recent Toledo Happenings

OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHTS

Over the last two months we have hosted two separate movie nights at our Toledo space! In May we watched “Wonka” and had our fill of chocolates and sweets to fit with the theme, and in June we watched the American classic, “The Princess Bride”. It has been a lot of fun hosting these nights – from the set up, to cooking food, to the clean up afterwards (and of course enjoying the show). Both times were well attended, so we will definitely be continuing these events in the future. Even a little rain didn’t stop the show!

WEEKLY BIBLE STUDIES

Since we finished going verse-by-verse through the book of Colossians, we have been doing a few different things during our weekly dinner and Bible discussions. We took one week to watch the inspiring film “The Insanity of God” about believers in persecution. Currently, we are working our way through a video series called “Follow Me” which has short biblical teachings from David Platt, and then we break into small groups to discuss what following Jesus really means in our life.

If you are a university student in Toledo, you’re invited to join us any THURSDAY at 6PM!

SLM Members Meeting

Street Level Ministries has an option of becoming a member within the organization. This opportunity is for people who have proven that Street Level is a priority in their life and who want to not just attend meetings, but be an active participant in them and serve God through SLM. This group of members (from both Toledo and Cebu) spent Saturday together to discuss, plan, and pray for some upcoming things. One of the main things being hosting a Youth Leader Summit on Bantayan Island soon. If you think to pray for this group and our upcoming endeavors – the summit, as well as outreaches as the new semester is fast approaching – we really appreciate it.

It is also important for us as a group to have fellowship, and get to know each other in real and deeper ways… and what better way than some friendly competition?

Outdoor Movie Night

This Friday (May 9) at 7PM at the Street Level Ministries Toledo Space we will be hosting an outdoor movie night! Free for students! Complete with hotdogs, fries, popcorn and plenty of sweets! You won’t want to miss it.
