If you can’t find a real pine tree… just make one!

(that means “Merry Christmas Everyone’ in Cebuano)

Did you know that Christmas is the Philippines’ favorite holiday? Celebrations begin in September and last until January! I always love to see how creative Filipinos get with their decorations. You can see a variety of Christmas trees made out of recycled bottles, fast food soda cups, cd’s, and whatever else one can get their hands on!

Since our last news update, we held our first-ever SLM Conference in the city. We gathered on the rooftop of Teofel Hostel for a day of video teachings, small group discussions, games, and of course, lots of snacks and coffee. We had one new student attend because of an ad he saw on the back of WOTS and five students who have come to SLM meetings in the past. Student feedback was encouraging; most of them had been pondering the topics we covered and were greatly challenged to consider why they believe what they believe. We covered the final session of the series at our last Friday night meeting and encouraged the students to keep discussing what they learned over Christmas break.

Exploring nature during the Kindred Retreat

Aside from getting our fill of ice cream and iced coffee when we come back to the USA, we truly enjoy spending time with the church in fellowship groups and various ministries. Laura was able to join the Kindred Ministry for their annual retreat. I heard she was still a bit jet lagged and spoke in foreign languages at times! I have enjoyed being a part of Street Level’s happenings, including fellowship with OneLife (Jenae’s team was the true Pictionary winner) and a Monday dinner and worship night. We also joined the WOTS writers from Menomonie, River Falls, and Duluth for pizza and peer revisions.

WOTS peer revisions in River Falls

Over the next couple weeks, we plan to visit our families, take a trip to JFB Duluth, and celebrate the new year in true JFB fashion at the annual NYE bash (one of our favorite JFB events). Thanks to everyone for welcoming us back like no time has passed. We are always blessed to be a part of you guys in person!

The saying that “you can’t see the forest through the trees” is very true. It has been nice to step away to dream, plan, and pray about what God is leading us to do next year. We have been asking questions like, “What are the needs of the people we are serving? How can we meet those needs? What hole can only we fill? What is the best use of our time? How can we work with others to build the Kingdom?” We have lots of ideas and are excited to see what God will do next year. We can make our plans but ultimately it is Him who determines our steps.

Prayer Requests

As we head into another season in Cebu, would you please join us in praying for the following:

  • That we would rest well and return to Cebu with renewed strength and energy.
  • For God’s direction and vision as we plan for 2019.
  • That the students we have been able to minister to would desire to know God more and put Him first in their lives… and that their families and pressures of the world would not hinder them from following God.

The All Church Workday

Nehemiah would like to thank everyone who showed up to lend a hand at the all-church workday last October. Because of your help, we were able to winterize the building as well as clean and organize many different areas of the church and Street Level house. We were also able to install more hardware to help keep the church more secure. Many of the extra items we found while organizing were donated to the future garage sale for Street Level.

River Falls Workday

In December the Nehemiah servants were given an opportunity to bless the River Falls ministry. Some of us worked on hanging speakers and shelves. Others shampooed carpet and installed a new water faucet to aid with making coffee and tea.  When the work was complete we all enjoyed some pizza together. The room is looking really nice these days and it seems to serve it’s purpose well. Thank you for giving the Nehemiah ministry the opportunity to help out in River Falls.

Future Projects

We have many projects lined up for the future. Some of them include rebuilding the back cement steps with exterior grade lumber and adding a custom built exterior coffeehouse kitchen back door. With the recent purchase of a new 40-foot extension ladder, we are now able to reach new heights of tuck pointing as well as other taller projects too.

In Closing

The Nehemiah ministry would like to thank you for allowing us to serve you as well as asking you to keep us in prayer. The enemy is always seeking to divide and conquer. Jesus wants to unite and build his church.  We desire Jesus’ plans to unite and build us up. He is good and faithful to finish what he started. Thank you for your recent prayers.

Whip it good!

Who we are…

OneLife is a ministry for young couples and young families. Our mission is to minister to each other in the everyday things of life, minister to our neighbors in ways that express Jesus love and gospel kindness, and deepen fellowship within the church.

Our monthly events offer a mix of things including planning meetings, outreach events, and fellowships. But at least once a month, we open up our meeting time to non-members in the church to meet over coffee to discuss the current Sunday message which inspires some good discussion and prayer. You will find us gathering at coffee shops, the co-op, and local restaurants for these events.

October

2018 Oct football fellowship
“Green-18! Green-18 -GO!”

October always has us looking to suck up on any remaining warm days we can get. We held our second flag football, fire and chili gig. The day was reasonably warm and sunny. Once again, no one got hurt (except egos) and we all headed home warn out from laughing, yelling, running, and eating some delicious chili. Some of our people get competitive while others are about as “who cares if we follow the rules” as they come. It makes for a really fun adventure.

November

2018 decoration party
Erik opted for a red bow for his head-wear.

November brought our members together to decorate for the Christmas season. This year we added some new ideas to upscale the feel. Our sanctuary is looking better and better all the time (new carpet, subtle decor, and lighting). This particular hangout included some holiday treats and cocoa. We also want to say thank you to Justin and Courtney for jumping in with us that day.

December

2018 OneLife party
What age does a younger person begin to love stuff like this?

December was especially fellowship-y. We saw a need for our group to come together more often just to be together and enjoy each other’s company. The leaders will be doing this and the members did. We gathered at the Huhmann’s house and fired up the pizza oven. So, did you know there were so many types of olives? I didn’t. We had fresh pizzas, sodas, and a smattering of other snacks. It was a nice relaxing evening.

Likewise, we also joined fellowship with Street Level. We brought an “IN-YOUR-FACE! -WINTER!” Summer picnic to the Street Level House. It was complete with virgin pina coladas, grilled chicken, burgers, BBQ beans, coleslaw, and orange fruity jello in molds. 50 plus attendees made for a very “rowdy” (Ben’s word) afternoon. Team Pete dominated Team Jenae in the event’s final activity, full-group Pictionary. The crazy thing is 95% of OneLife are the ghost of Street Level past. So, it was just a really fun way to connect, talk, encourage, and fellowship together before the students all started finals week. Thanks to Street Level for a great time!

Next on the Docket

January begins our winter neighborhood gatherings. Once each month, two families will be hosting an event to connect to neighbors. Who knows what fun things will come about. Its clear we all have neighbors who like to come together for food and fun. We just need to make it happen.

We will be taking a road trip to the Twin Cities in January with our friends from Gnosko. Their members and ours will be splitting up, cruising to the big city, and enjoying a game, food, and fellowship at none other than Ikea. Wondering how that works? The truth will be revealed.

February also presents a members fellowship with our friends in the Kindred ministry. It involves shenanigans with bowling balls, themed teams, and more! We are excited to make it happen.

Get Involved!

Covenant member of JFB, if you would like to get involved, reach out to pastor Tom for how to make that happen.

Church guest, you are welcome to attend an event if you like. Details of what we are doing and when is found on the JFB calendar page or you can email us at onelife@jfbelievers.com

December 19, 2018 Believers Church

Happy Holidays! God has been at work this last month in River Falls. We continue to meet on Sunday for the community study, and on Tuesdays for Street Level. During this time we have had the chance to get to know new people and some people have moved on to other things.

STREET LEVEL HAPPENINGS

On Tuesdays during Street Level we have been going through a few different series. In one we are discussing people in the Bible and how they followed God. We have also been going through a series that challenges us to think about what we believe, for example “Do you believe there is God?”

A few other things we did were an outreach on campus and aChristmas Party. We brought the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse down to campus and gave away free coffee. It was cold, but we had a lot of fun and were able to talk to a few people about who we are and why we were giving away coffee.  Some of Street Level Menomonie joined us for our Christmas party. We ate together, played games, and had a chance to fellowship together.

Many of the college students will be going home for the next few weeks while they are on Holiday break. We pray that God will use this time to bring them closer to Him.

SUNDAY COMMUNITY STUDY

On Sundays we have been going through 2 Thessalonians. We continue with our weekly format of teaching followed by discussion and then transition to a meal.

We also had the opportunity to get together and do a workday with Nehemiah. The improvements made have been really appreciated! We installed a new sink faucet, mounted our speaker system, put up a coat rack, painted our bifold sign, and more.

Please pray for us as we go into the new year that we continue to have guidance from God for the ministry, and pray for the people that they would grow to know God at a deeper level.

JANUARY CALENDAR

  • Sundays: 5pm / JFBelievers Bible Study,  6pm / meal

Looking back…

JFB Duluth has had an another eventful year, and our activities in December were a great way to end strong.  We hosted yet another winter rummage sale that was very well attended.  The amount of donations that poured in was amazing as always, and our sanctuary was packed once again.  We opened up the kitchen and served breakfast, bakery, and lunch. I think that I can speak for our group when I say that we all enjoy having these sales. They are a great way to meet people in the community and yet another way for us to support missions work both overseas as well as locally. It was great to see many new faces at “RavenFed” enjoying the space that we have worked hard to create.

Going Forward…

Later on this month we will also be having another coffee outreach for the morning commuters who drive by our church.  Every Wednesday morning for the past two summers, a group from the church would get up extra early in order to give away coffee to the morning commuters who drive past our church.  We intend to make contact with them once again on the 19th of this month by baking cookies & brewing fresh coffee for our commuting friends. Our Community Group will be executing this outreach as always, and would appreciate your prayers for our future endeavors.

Street Level Superior has also had an eventful year. They are continuing to meet at Big Apple Bagels, which is close to the UW-Superior campus on Tuesday nights. They have also been meeting on Sunday nights and cooking dinner together in a dorm, which has been a great way for them to meet students.  Street Level also teamed up with the Community Group to go and cut down a Christmas tree for the church. We all braved the frigid temperatures, and found the perfect tree for the church. They will end the semester by going tubing at Spirit Mountain and having a Christmas party at the church.

3 Hours & 28 Minutes.

That’s how long you spent standing in the bathroom brushing your teeth in 2018 (if you’re an “average” person). Average people like you invested nearly 3 ½ hours of the past year in cleaning their fangs twice a day for roughly 2 minutes each time. You might’ve been a little more or less devoted to the process than others were, depending on your appreciation for good oral hygiene. Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume that each of us spent at least some measure of time brushing our teeth in the last 12 months.

So let me ask you, was it worth the time you spent? Any regrets? I mean, 3 ½ hours is a good number of ticks off the clock, and we need to make sure that we’re being good stewards of our time. Do you have as many teeth as you did last year? Are you happy with the way they look? Are they still healthy, or are they getting worse? You probably haven’t thought about it very much, but maybe you should. After all, three+ hours is a lot of time, and you’ve got important things to do with your life. If scrubbing your teeth isn’t helping you anymore, maybe you should consider getting rid of your toothbrush next year.

3 weeks, 2 days, & 4 Hours.

That’s how long you spent in the church communing with God’s people in 2018 (if you’re a “disciple” here). The average member of the JFB-Duluth discipleship program invested nearly one full month of the past year in building up the Kingdom of God each week. You might’ve been a little more or less devoted to the process than others were, depending on your appreciation for the things of God. Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume that each of us spent at least some measure of time at the church in the last 12 months.

So let me ask you, was it worth the time you spent? Any regrets? I mean, 23 days is a good number of squares on the calendar, and we need to make sure that we’re using God’s resources wisely. By the way, this figure doesn’t even include the time spent in the mission field, at retreats, campouts, or conferences. But between the nearly 100 sermons, the 50 hours of class time, the outreaches, the workdays, and the small group studies, was it worth the effort? Do you have as much enthusiasm as you did last year? Is the church any stronger because of your investment here? Are you still healthy, or are you getting worse? After all, three+ weeks is a lot of time, and you’ve got important things to do with your life. If your involvement in the church isn’t helping you anymore, maybe you should consider dropping your enrollment next year. Have you thought about this very much? Maybe you should.

Why The Concern?

It might sound counter-productive, or even cruel for a pastor to invite the people of his church to discontinue their participation in the fellowship. But might I remind you, this is precisely what Jesus did in John 6:67 when He asked His disciples, “Do you want to go away?” Lots of His students had already abandoned the group for various reasons, but Jesus wanted to know if there was anyone else who wanted to do the same. Simply put, if someone has a secret desire to get out, then Jesus doesn’t want them to stick around. He knows it’ll be harmful to the Church.

Jesus doesn’t necessarily want people to leave Him or the Church, He just wants them to be healthy. But a hidden craving to be freed from the burden of following Him isn’t really a sign of great strength, which is why He poses the question. Carrying on with a divided heart isn’t healthy in the least. That’s probably why He invites people to leave. Jesus forces people to reevaluate their priorities and decide whether they’ll move forward with unflinching loyalty, or walk away altogether. And it appears that He would accept either decision. He just wants honesty. He just wants a healthy Church.

Are You Healthy?

If you’re unable to look back at 2018 and feel satisfied with the time and effort you’ve invested at this church, the answer is “no”. If you’re not eager to devote another year of your life to this church and these people, then the answer is “no”. If you are living in unrepentant sin (of any kind; emotional, physical, sexual, etc.), then the answer is “no”. If indeed the answer is “no”, then Jesus wants to know if you’d like to leave. He expected His disciples to make that decision in John 6, and He expects the same of us. Sometimes Jesus gives you that responsibility.

There may not be any harmful repercussions for thoughtless tooth-brushing, but the same cannot be said for thoughtless Christianity. It’s possible to follow Jesus year after year and still go nowhere, but the consequences of living that way are devastating. For all their walking with Christ, some folks in the church are gaining no real ground, and sadly, most of them won’t realize it until the very end. People need to decide for themselves what they plan on doing with their life and their future. Jesus expects it of them. This isn’t tooth-brushing after all, this is discipleship.

Another Year Ahead…

Most of us give little thought to the practical benefits of brushing our teeth. We just do it. We do it once in the morning when we’re half-awake, and again in the evening when we’re half-asleep. It’s a short, mindless routine that we’ve been practicing for years now. But, of course, this article isn’t really about dental hygiene, as you well know by now. It’s actually meant to address your spiritual condition. Teeth-brushing just happens to be a suitable illustration for what the spirit-life can easily become for people in the church…a short, mindless routine that we’ve been practicing for years now. If you’re not really aware of what you’re doing here, then the time you’ve spent at the church holds no more eternal value than the 3 ½ hours you spent this year with a brush in your mouth.

Don’t let next year look like that for you. Find out where you’re supposed to be and commit to it. It may be here at JFB-Duluth, and it may not. You are under obligation before God to know what His will is. That takes conscious effort. Much unlike brushing your teeth, it doesn’t happen while you’re half-asleep.

What will 2019 look like for you? Do you consider yourself to be a part of this church or not? Are you happy to be here, or are you secretly restless? Is your spiritual condition healthy & stable, or are you getting worse? Being part of JFB-Duluth means investing a significant amount of your life in the activities of this church, whether that’s hours, days, weeks, or months…

Is this really worth your time?
