May 29, 2018 Believers Church

Today

The school year has come to a close and most of the international students from UW-Stout and UW-River Falls have returned to their home countries. For some of them this is just a summer break and they will be back again next year to continue their studies in America. Others have returned home for good with only this one year of experiences to form their opinions of what it is like to live in the western culture of the United States. When the school year began, we also began a new ministry outreach at Jesus Fellowship of Believers.

Street Level International Community is an arm of Street Level Ministries that was formed in an attempt to reach out to students from other nations that come to our local campuses to further their education. As the school year got underway, we began the year by holding weekly meetings designed to give students a chance to practice their English speaking and fluency. We were excited when two students from Korea showed up for our very first meeting. We really enjoyed our time with them, and discovered how hard it can be to explain exactly why we Americans speak the way that we do. As the semester went along, we had a number of students from China attend and were able to start building some friendships that lasted throughout the year. Some of these students heard about our meeting because they were matched with host families that attend JFB. Others were invited by members of Street Level that connected with international students in their classes on campus. As the semester wore on, the need for practicing their English diminished as their skills and confidence increased. As a result, our outreach efforts shifted more to hosting events such as snow tubing, bowling, and meeting at friends and neighbors houses for meals.

The Past

Looking back on the year, it seems to have gone by very quickly and the amount of time that we were able to spend with each student seems brief. It is easy to wonder if we were able to have any impact on their lives for the kingdom at all. But it is my hope and belief that what they were able to experience while engaging with our group was the kind of warmth, love, and acceptance that can only come from Christian believers who are able to reflect the nature and personality of the one true God. Many of these students come from countries where their belief system does not center on the idea of a personal loving God. Their faith rather is based on deeds to do, concepts to believe, and traditions to follow.

Most of the students that we met don’t follow these beliefs anymore, viewing them as the old ways followed by their grandparents. Most of them come to college with no personal belief or participation in spiritual things. We are prayerful and trust that God will use this interaction with American believers to challenge their thinking and touch their hearts. We were blessed this semester to meet a few students who came from their home countries already born again with a strong belief in God. It was a unique experience to be able to hear stories of how they practice their faith at home, and how that compares to what they experienced here in the states. It was a privilege for use to be able to encourage them in their faith while they were here, and we were sad to see them go.

What’s Next

As the summer comes on, it is a time for us now to look back at lessons learned and to seek God and his direction for this ministry next fall. I wanted to thank all of you what lent a hand to us last year, we couldn’t have done it without you. I would also request your prayers as we dream and scheme for next year that we would fall in line with how God would have us move forward in reaching out to international students.

God Bless, Andy

May 25, 2018 Shofar Missions Cebu

Hello from the Philippines

The 2018 Philippines Missions Team arrived April 30. While they were here we ministered in Manila, Cebu, and Toledo. Pastor Tim, Sharon, Ben, and Sasha also had the opportunity to travel to another island and minister at a Pastor’s Conference!

Camps

day camp
Pastor Tim talked about doing daily devotions during the Day Camps in Manila. Each camper also received a booklet outlining how to do them.

The trip started with a short trip to Manila where we hosted three Day Camps. The first event was a Kid’s Day Camp featuring the Jesus Story for Children and the other two were Youth Day Camps covering the curriculum Jesus Changes Everything. It was neat to be part of the Youth Day Camps this year; when the 2017 team was ministering in Luzon, I had the opportunity to work with the youth on the team and on the fly we switched to the Shofar Camp material in English at one of our events. The trip to Manila did not happen without challenges. We dealt with cancelled flights, delayed flights, and a long ride home from the airport due to traffic….BUT with all the ministry we did it is no wonder why we had trouble getting there and back!

Street Level

Back in Cebu we divided and conquered! The kids group joined forces with the Street Level group to  invite people to a Summer Rooftop Party, hang posters and banners for weekly meetings, and host two live radio broadcasts. We also had our share of trips to the circle to pick up water and groceries as needed and we learned Jon’s backpack could fit 2 large water jugs in it.

2018 Philippines Team Members at Street Level

Though school is out for the summer we have continued to hold the course as much as possible. Some team members were also able to attend Street Level while they were here and meet some of the students! Justin had an opportunity to guest teach as well. We are looking forward to classes starting in just a few weeks…the streets are quieter the university zone – much like Menomonie during spring break or summer vacation!

Inayawan

kids camp
We started with the group that had arrived and at the end of our event we had quite a few kids 🙂

To close out our weekend of ministry in Cebu part of the team returned to the Church of the Nazarene Inayawan again this year. We had the opportunity to minister to about 50 children. The bus pulled up and each time about 20 kids would greet us or they would wander in the gate! It was great to connect with staff and youth from the last time I visited with the team and from the school year.

Shofar Youth Camp

Last but not least before the team said good bye and headed back to America we held the 2018  Shofar Mission CHRIST DISCIPLESHIP Youth Camp. Like so many things the team did this trip, it was awesome to see Shofar Camp come together! The first day of camp reminded me of the first day of school as a kid…but I guess that is true for any big event. You go to bed the night before excited to start the next day knowing the months of planning, documenting, advertising, and organizing brought us to this point. Though we organized, studied, planned, and prepared, we went into camp knowing that God also had lessons he wanted to teach….pouring rain during team games well, guess that means we play inside, tech difficulties…use the back up projector and roll with it.

In closing, please pray that we would take the lessons, advice, and conversations we learned and had this last month to be leaner and meaner as we continue the fight! Also, pray for all of the kids & youth we had an opportunity to meet. As Britt and I start the next chapter, pray we would never stop being a student but forever seeking to grow and learn.

May 22, 2018 Street Level Radio

BDR News

Here at Burning Dog Radio, we’ve been getting ready for Summer!  After a semester of great concerts with Street Level, remote broadcasts at Stout, and well, winter….we are ready to get out into the community!  The semester has been great, and we had the chance to welcome some new people to the station!  Alexis and Pete are our newest full time staff.  Alex, Ben, and Kristen from Street Level have also be very involved in the station.  It has been awesome to have them with the group and to see what God is doing as they learn about service and reaching out in this creative way.

Yam Haus

Our most recent concert broadcast was from Yam Haus, and you can see the Revival Travelling Show they did with us below.  If you want to subscribe to our YouTube channel – you will start getting notifications when we add new shows like these!

Please be in prayer for the station as God grows our staff (thank you God!) and as we reach out to the community with not only the station itself, but through advertising, and remote broadcasts!  We want to use our time wisely since Summer is already almost over! (just kidding)

Thanks for your support and prayers!

May 20, 2018 River Falls Ministry

Hello Spring

It felt like an abrupt end to the winter and consequently the semester here in River Falls. One week we are calling off people from driving over due to snow, and the next week we have windows open at the Street Level place. But, now we’re full-on summer and looking forward to what lies ahead.

What’s been

As the semester wound down, we had the chance to take the Tuesday night Street Level group to attend a lecture on campus by a former atheist-turned Christian. He was a material scientist at the U of M for many years, where he spent a lot of time looking into the plausibility of the chemical origins of life – and he discovered that the random chance theories just didn’t make sense. He spoke to the crowd of about 200 in very down to earth terms and took and answered a lot of questions from the attendees. Getting outside of our norm to attend an event like this was a welcomed thing for our group.

Street Level just finished the last few weeks of the semester wrapping up “The Story” curriculum. We believe it was a good series to give everyone a comprehensive understanding of the big picture of the Bible: God’s plan throughout history to restore humankind’s relationship with himself. The series ended by looking at Revelation – not to discuss plagues and the Antichrist – but learning about what kind of life lies ahead for believers in the New Creation. Our very last meeting of the semester was a great excuse to grill out together and enjoy the weather. We played some games and kept the mood pretty light. As we said goodbye to the students, who were all returning home for the summer, we wished them well and in our minds prayed that God would keep them growing over the next 3 months. We hope their summer is fruitful.

This Summer

The Sunday evening Bible study will continue through the summer at 5pm, followed by dinner at 6pm. Our focus will remain very heavily on verse-by-verse followed by open discussion concerning application of the text. We are currently in Galatians and plan to move around in the New Testament letters over the course of the summer. We’ve had some new visitors recently to the study, and we are curious what God has planned for it. In addition to the Sunday study, our other official outlet for community outreach will take place on Tuesday evenings. We will be doing a weekly grill out at 6:30pm and have the Street Level place open for hangout.

May 16, 2018 Street Level College Ministries

Street Level finished up the spring semester as the UW Stout school year came to a close. It was an exciting semester with new faces and people getting involved in the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse, Burning Dog Radio, Word on the Street Magazine, and the Creative Studio. We had some graduates – some of whom will stay in Menomonie and others who will move on to God’s next adventure in their lives.

At the end of April a large group of Street Levelers left for a shirt term trip to the Philippines. They did day camps for kids and older youth’s. They also joined forces with Street Level Cebu for some city outreach via: two radio broadcasts, a WOTS giveaway, a rooftop part at Teofel, and SLMC’s normal Friday night bible study.

Later this month Street Level will host it’s annual Thrift Sale at the SL House. (May 25-26) Proceeds from the sale will go towards an in-country trip to the Store Vincent Mission in David, Kentucky during Spring Break in 2019.

The remainder of the summer will involved hangouts and prep work for the upcoming fall semester.

May 14, 2018 Believers Church Duluth

Looking Back

As I’m sitting down to write the Duluth update, it’s striking me how much God has allowed us to do – and in that, shape who we are becoming – this past month.

We have started preparing for our own domestic missions trip to Kentucky (which is a first for us). Please pray for us in this as we get ready – physically and spiritually. Because of the trip happening, we got to spend some time with Brian and Laura H. when they joined us for our prayer breakfast and work day earlier in the month. We accomplished a lot that day, in rummage sale set up and in getting the sanctuary ready for Sunday church services that will be held up there soon.
There was a night that a few of us Superior residents were displaced from our homes due to the refinery fire/explosion so we made the best of it and had a sleepover at the church.
We had our 9th annual spring rummage sale recently, which proved yet again to be one of the best days of the year for us. We got to meet new people and see some “regulars” at our sales as well. And we were able to raise some funds to put towards missions endeavors.
Street Level has another semester in the books now and is looking forward to seeing what God has for us over the summer.

Sundays

We’ve just finished up the studies through James and Jude on Sunday mornings, so we will be going through 1 and 2 Peter now. We also had the opportunity to hear from Jonah when he and Jess joined us for a weekend. Wednesdays have been a very enjoyable read through the first few of the second book of Psalms, sometimes followed by smaller group discussions. In classes we are really digging into the doctrine of the Holy Spirit so we can grow in our understanding of Him and learn how to truly be Spirit led.
Thanks for your prayers.
