Month: October 2021

October 28, 2021 The Homeschool Ministry

What do caves, corn and creation science have in common?  That’s right, they were all part of our homeschool group’s activities over the past month.  We’ve had an active “Back to School” season, filled with various events.

Thursday Afternoons

We meet every Thursday afternoon for a time of enrichment; a time for families to come together to learn and grow in several areas.  Recently, we been doing drawing lessons and book discussions, in addition to presenting projects that the kids have been working on as part of their schoolwork.

Since, fitness is important in our lives, we always play a sport during the second half of our time together.  In September, Danielle Harnisch was able to give us lessons in volleyball skills.  The month of October had great weather for football, so we donned our bandanas (for flag football) and the kids were able to score some touchdowns!

Field Trips and Lessons

In addition to our regular meetings, we were also able to go on several field trips.  In mid-September, we toured Crystal Cave in Spring Valley.  We had a great time learning about rocks, bats, and total darkness.  We were also able to visit Valley Feeds where Nick gave a tour of the feed mill, teaching us about what he does and what farm animals eat.  The kids were even able to mix up multiple bags of pig food, complete with learning to tie a miller’s knot.

One more opportunity that we were able to be apart of was a Creation Science class with Laura.  The kids learned all about fingerprints and the God-given, unique differences in them.  Who knew there were so many different kinds!

Prayer Requests

  • That our day-to-day at home learning, teaching, parenting would glorify God
  • For unity in our homeschool group

Check out what we’ve been up to in the Philippines!

Street Level Ministries

At the end of September, we had a couple of SLM members visit the office for breakfast. Since we still meet online, we’re thankful for opportunities to meet in person. We’re continuing to go through the Alpha series and supplemental discipleship discussions on Friday nights. A couple new students have joined  since they saw our semester promo video on Facebook. Ben and Sasha also joined us for a meeting recently. It’s always nice to keep in touch with the SLM chapters in the USA.

WOTS issue 88 has been sent to print and should be ready this week. The writers will gather virtually this Thursday to pick out local articles and start on Issue 89.

On Saturday, we are having a phygital Halloween party. A few students will join us at the office and others who live in the province will join us on Google Meet. Everyone has been so busy lately, so we hope it’ll be a time to fellowship and laugh together. There will be costumes, candy, games, and prizes…it’s not really a Filipino holiday, so it should be fun to do something different.

Exploring Creation Science

At the beginning of the month, a special fingerprinting lesson was taught to the JFB homeschool group. Each student was able to take their own fingerprint and compare it to the main 3 types of fingerprints. This lesson shows how each person is uniquely created in the image of God and no two people (even twins!) have the same set of finger or toe prints. New Explore booklets were delivered to Inayawan Nazarene and Southern Bethany. Laura was able to visit and fellowship with the staff at Southern Bethany while delivering the booklets in person. Again, these limited face to face meetings are something we don’t take for granted! Weekly lessons continue on Facebook Live and Google Meet.

Shofar Youth Network

Last week, we delivered a USB with teaching curriculum to South Cebu Church on Talisay. It included 4 sessions from the NUA series with Cebuano subtitles and English teaching guides, which will be used in part or whole for a youth camp the church is hosting in December. The topics include “How Did We Get Here?” “Jesus: Fact it Fiction?” “What About the Resurrection?” and “What Was Jesus Really Like?” One of the ways we seek to help local churches is by providing teaching resources like NUA for youth groups to use. We also post monthly on a blog with topics that could challenge and help youth leaders.

Prayer Requests

  • The Philippines as a whole – upcoming presidential election (May 2022) as candidates are already campaigning; it is causing much division and uncertainty among the people here. We are praying for God to guide the election and place godly people in positions of influence.
  • Street Level Ministries – for the students to grow as disciples, for new students to get connected, and the distribution of the new issue of WOTS.
  • Exploring Creation Science – for the students who received Explore booklets, relationships with schools and staff, and endurance to continue online learning.
  • Our Community – God keeps giving us opportunities to serve and be served by our neighbors. These relationships mean a lot to us. A new family will move in next month, so we’re excited to meet them!
October 19, 2021 River Falls Ministry

Who is that behind the mask you ask? That’s us! A few of us had the opportunity to be on campus for the “City and Sustainability Sampler” on the UW- River Falls Campus. We brought down two kiosks, gave away coffee coupons, and had a drawing for a few Bible journals. It was a lot of fun meeting students and other people in the community. Keep reading here to see what we have been up to this last month in River Falls.

Street Level Campus Ministry

Besides meeting Monday nights, we have had a few fellowship opportunities. The campus advisor for Street Level UW-River Falls invited us over to his house for a hangout at the end of September. We grilled brats and hot dogs, ate Halloween-related snacks (look up Hostess Scary Cakes), and even got a tour of his award-winning rose garden. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other a little bit more.

Also, A few weekends ago we joined the Street Level Summit in Menomonie along with Duluth. Some of us came for the Garden Party, slept over (who doesn’t like a grown-up slumber party?), and then attended the Summit on Saturday. The main topic was “Jesus is Better than….”. It challenged us to be thinking Christians – able to be faithful in the middle of ever-changing culture. Since there was plenty to chew on, we took some time to further discuss the topic the following Monday at Street Level.

Believers Campus Church

On Wednesdays we’ve been meeting at the university for Believers Campus Church and are continuing through the book of John. We feel really blessed to have the opportunity to be on campus – it’s allowed for us to connect with a lot more people this year. Some have become regulars at church while others have become regulars to Street Level. Over time we hope these two groups grow more connected.

Prayer Requests

  • Students
    • To want and to seek after being used by God beyond just going to Bible studies.
    • That they wouldn’t get distratcted from God as life gets busier towards the middle of the semester.
  • Coffeehouse
    • That we would continue to meet people in the community, and we would have the opportunity to share who God is with them.

October 13, 2021 Believers Church Duluth

It’s already October??!!! Okay, here is what has been happening in Duluth.

TEACHING

On Sundays, we are continuing in the book of Romans (6-8). Here we have learned that you either obey sin or you obey Christ. There is a difference between servant and slave. Under the law, you die, but Jesus is the perfect husband. God’s law reveals the truth of the condition of your soul. To fight sin, start with the renewal of your mind. When you were born again, you were born into war (sin vs. flesh). Victory over sin is possible (through Jesus). On Wednesdays, at the Street Level house we are going through 1 Peter (1-2). Here we have learned that we should get to a point where God can utilize our character, and that character refinement is wonderful! We should “abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul”. And we have also learned the importance of submission. Please pray that we remember this in the coming months and years ahead, and that we can strengthen and encourage one another through love of what scripture has said.

OUTREACH

Beyond just the weekly outreaches, Community Group was provided two separate ways to reach the community in bigger ways this past month. Superior had their East End Days (whole community having a rummage sale) that we were able to use as a way to reach a neighborhood that we have not before. A couple allowed the church to set up a rummage sale in their yard that day, as well as providing information about who we are as a church. On the same day, a separate group was in Chester Bowl (a Duluth community on the East side of town) and participated in their Fall Festival. It was so chaotically fun!! Those who were at the Fall Festival had the coffee trailer set up as a vendor and a way to also provide information about the church. Looking ahead, the Community Group has been invited back to Boo at the Zoo through the church. Please pray for us to not take it for granted and that God would provide those opportunities where we get to show what He is like.

STREET LEVEL

Street Level has been busy as well this past month. They started a series called “Alpha”. They have used several nights to have dinner together and chat ,or watch movies, or even just fellowship by playing games. After the rummage sale, they were able to set up a booth on campus to provide students with hot beverages in the morning, as well as get the word out on who they are. Street Level was then able to host Burning Dog Radio for a live broadcast at Jacket Fest. This weekend they were headed to the summit hosted by the Street Level in Menomonie. Please pray that God would provide people for Street Level, and that God would direct the group in what endeavors they need to pursue.

I think that’s all I’ve got for now…… Until we see each other again.

The term etcetera is commonly used at the end of a list indicating that farther similar things are included that are too tedious to list and unworthy of any kind of special attention or note. One man, C.T. Studd took hold of the term as a call to fulfill the commands of Christ to enlist in his mission with no promise of earthly reward, fame, or glory. C.T. Studd was an English missionary who had a rarely matched passion to see the evangelization of the world. He faithfully served the lord in China, India, and Africa, some of the hardest mission fields of his day. His life motto was, “If Jesus Christ is God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.” Around our church we know him for some of his well known quotes such as, “Some wish to live within the sound of church or chapel bell. I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell!”

This quote sounds good doesn’t it? Yet I wonder how many of us are willing to truly embrace the totality of this quote’s repercussions.  Explaining this directive, Studd wrote a short pamphlet entitled Christ’s Etceteras. In it he encouraged Christians to take the mission of Christ seriously and rebuked those who lived their Christianity with no sense of urgency.

An Excerpt from Studd’s writing

“Believing that further delay would be sinful, some of God’s insignificants and nobodies, but trusting in our Omnipotent God, have decided to make a definite attempt to render the evangelization of the world an accomplished fact. For this purpose we have banded together under the name of “Christ’s Etceteras,” and invite others of God’s people to join us in this glorious enterprise. We are merely Christ’s nobodies, otherwise Christ’s Etceteras. We rejoice in and thank God for the good work being carried on in the already occupied lands by God’s Regular Forces. We seek to attack and win to Christ only those parts of the devil’s empire which are beyond the extremest outposts of the regular army of God. Our method is to search and find out what parts of the world at present remain unevangelized, and then by faith in Christ, by prayer to God, by obedience to the Holy Spirit, by courage, determination, and supreme sacrifice, to accomplish their evangelization with the utmost dispatch.”

What’s in it for us?

He needed no recognition, he was fully aware that he was insignificant, a nobody, Christ’s etcetera. He traded fame for anonymity and obscurity, ease for great pain and trials, wealth for extreme poverty. And in doing so he gained an extraordinary legacy that has changed entire countries for generations.

We are not to faithfully obey because we have some desire for fame and recognition. We faithfully obey to promote the cause of Christ and to bring glory to HIS name. For the Christian the legacy that we leave really is not for us, but for Jesus. Like John the baptist says in John 3:30 Jesus must increase, and we must decrease.

We are to spend our life increasing Christ whatever the cost. In doing that we will live a life worth living. Whether we are remembered or not, one thing is certain, Jesus won’t forget. Spend your life for Him. You won’t be forgotten, at least not by the one person whose remembrance of us will count for anything in the end. In the end, who do you want to know your name, do you want the world to tout your name to the masses or do you want Jesus to look at you and say “well done.” What a privilege it is to be one of Christ’s insignificant nobodies. What a privilege it is to be counted as one of His “etceteras.”

CT Studd’s closing thoughts

Below is the conclusion of Studd’s pamphlet. (edited slightly for readability)

“Who will enlist for Jesus Christ today, to fight to a finish, to crown HIM Lord of all the world? I come to do Your will, O my God. I enlist in Your army for this definite purpose. My one ambition in life shall now be to seek by all the means and powers at my disposal to live, pray, work and die to bring about the evangelization of every unevangelized part of the world, and every creature therein, and so crown Christ Lord of all. I admit to being the biggest fool on earth. All the better, for no other can henceforth fear being too small, too weak, or too foolish for the job.

God loves to use such, that all the glory may be Christ’s. Consecrate yourself this day unto the Lord for this cause.

Dare you refuse? You must ere long meet your Lord and Saviour face to face! How will you do so if, when you had the chance, you refused to fight for His Coronation?”

The Bait

There was a recent blog post from Crossway titled “4 Ways to Fight Sexual Temptation”.  I had struggled with this issue heavily in the past… I am also keenly aware of how foolish it is to think myself beyond falling to this temptation in the future. So I was immediately intrigued.  Then I recalled several recent conversations with Christian brothers and sisters (some single, some dating, and some married), who had all revealed this was a real struggle for them as well.  The longer this email lingered in my inbox, the more tempting it bacame to click on it…  What did this blogger have to say… about such a secretive and sordid subject?

The Hook

After a few days… and further revelation of how treacherous this problem can become for those in the church… It was too much. I could wait no longer. Resistance was futile. I had to click and see what was behind the link “4 Ways to Fight Sexual Temptation.”

4 Ways to Fight Sexual Temptation | Crossway Articles

The Catch

I was pleasantly surprised.  If you read it, I bet you were too.  Rarely do you come across something so concise on how to fight sexual temptation, yet filled with practical and down-to-earth solutions.

But isn’t that often how God works?  His desire is to help us.  He doesn’t overcomplicate it.  Quite unlike our adversary, God’s bate is for our good. Taking His hook only leads us into spiritual well being. Perhaps it’s time to be pleasantly surprised… by what God has in store for us.
