A ministry for adult singles at JFBelievers

November 15, 2019 Kindred Adults Ministry

Fellowship

The Kindred Singles Fellowship has been enjoying some fall activities and hitting the streets as the weather quickly turns colder.

In October we took a road trip to Furgeson’s Orchard in Eau Claire. Nothing says welcome to fall in Wisconsin like a corn maze, adult pedal tractors, apple cinnamon donuts, and a giant spinning red apple…

Then to kick off November, we headed east of Eau Claire and to Big Falls County Park in Eau Claire. While there, we discovered two waterfalls, several trails, and some crazy cool rock formations.

Community Outreach

We also hit the area of Fall Creek with posters advertising our Sunday Services broadcasted on The CW at 10 AM weekly.

Upcoming Events

Toward the end of November, we plan to take a road trip to the cities where we will meet up with the Christian Singles Fellowship for some volleyball and hang out time. This will be our first attempt meeting up with another Christian Singles Fellowship, so we are excited and looking forward to it.

Then we will kick off December with a retreat at Camp Wapo near Amery, WI. This year we will be covering the small book “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence. In years past, going through a book together has been quite personal and highly impactful. We are praying for another great weekend together this year. Download the flyer below for more info…

As always, please keep the Kindred Singles Fellowship in prayer. Navigating Christianity as a single adult has its own unique challenges… just as every circumstance does. May we all look together to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…

Prayer Requests:

  • Meeting up with the Christian Singles Fellowship for volleyball and games on Friday night, November 22nd. We hope we would be a blessing to them, and that we would be strengthened as we get to know more people who are navigating Christianity as single adults.
  • The upcoming Kindred Retreat on “The Practice of the Presence of God”. We desire an impactful weekend getting to know our great God.

Our Mission

The main goal of the Kindred Fellowship is to provide a spiritual family of brothers and sisters for single adults within the church. We do this by regularly praying for each other, enjoying one another’s company, and getting to know our community in some really fun ways…

Kindred & Street Level @ Camp Damro

We recently had our annual campout at Camp Damro. We were so blessed to have the Street Level Campus Ministry join us this year. God gave us the perfect weather. We started Friday night with testimonies from members from both Street Level and Kindred. We then capped the night off with some fireworks (which turned into a competition with a neighbor’s explosions… but I’m pretty sure we won that war). It was a blast! The next morning started with devotions around the fire with pastor Tim’s recent newsletter article on Finishing Well. We then took a swift tube ride down the fast-moving Red Cedar River. A few adventurous folks went for a second bonus ride around Camp Damro and found an old rope swing. Heather from Street Level was a clear champ (she has a nack at mid-air acrobatics). We have an awesome church family…

Meeting Our Community

Kindred also took a road trip to local towns to let people know about our Sunday Morning Broadcast on The CW TV station. We hung some posters and stopped in Osseo for some fantastic traditional Norwegian cuisine at Norske Nook… Any road trip in the church van equals a good time!

We were also given a perfect day to give away ice cream floats at two local parks. We handed out 75 floats, mostly to people we were meeting for the first time. Several people asked who we were, why we were giving away floats, and about our church. We handed out a few flyers with more information to those who wanted them. It was a great way to get to know our neighbors in Menomonie and let them know who we are.

Prayer Requests

We would appreciate your prayers for the Kindred Fellowship as we move into late summer.

  • That we would grow closer as brothers and sisters, sharing spiritual needs, praying for each other, and speaking into each other’s lives.
  • That those who joined our group over the last couple of months would quickly feel at home within our fellowship.
  • That we would continue to find ways to meet our local community, get to know them, and show them who we are in Christ.

Mission Statement

The Kindred Ministry Exists to provide a spiritual family for single adults, offering fellowship, discipleship, and outreach to our local community.

Fellowship & Community Outreach

As we turned our calendars to 2019, the Kindred Ministry hosted an afternoon of holiday goodies, puzzles, and board games in the Blind Munchies. We packed the place out as church members and friends enjoyed mixing it up for an afternoon of goodies and laughter.

Goodies & Games

The Kindred Ministry hosted a Super Bowl grilling tailgate party in February. Once again, the Blind Munchies was packed with church members enjoying the game along-side various friends from the Menomonie community. We served over 70 brats and 70 servings of super nachos. A few lucky Super Bowl Bingo winners went home with a chocolate football, a free BMC breakfast, and a sweet BDR cap.

Later in February, the One Life Couples Ministry invited us to mix our group with theirs on five bowling teams. We dressed up with team themes, and took to the lanes for some serious bowling! The videos below say enough…

Discipleship

Though we like to have fun, we realize if we aren’t growing as disciples, then we are missing the point. We entered 2019 with the book “The Holiness of God” from our Kindred Ministry Retreat. As we read and discuss, we hope to gain a better understanding of who we are, and the holiness God has called us to.

On that note, our Kindred members also meet regularly to read and discuss the book “Discipling” by Mark Dever. Our hope is to gain insight that we can put into practice for those we rub shoulders with in church, at work, in our families, and elsewhere.

Prayer Requests

  1. That we might continue to grow in holiness in our individual lives as image bearers of God.
  2. For greater love and service to one another, our church family, and our local community.
  3. That we would grow as disciples and disciplers, so we can better meet the spiritual needs of those we rub shoulders with at church, in our jobs, and in our local community.

The Kindred Adults is a fellowship of about twenty single adults between 28 and 83 years old (and counting).  We meet weekly at JF Believers on Sunday afternoons after lunch.  Visitors are always welcome.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO…

The first Sunday of the month, we participate in a local outreach or enjoy a local festivity.  Recently, we went to Govin’s Meats and enjoyed a wagon ride, tug-a-war, and their pumpkin and apple cannons (Watch out little goats… Gretta is at the gun)!  We also took on their incredibly difficult corn maze.  While getting lost in the maze, we even ran into some old friends…  Wait… Did we lose them there last year?

On the second and fourth Sunday of the month, we split into groups of 4-5 and hit the local diners drive-ins and dives (i.e. Menomonie Family Restaurant, Exit 45, Denny’s, and Perkins).  After ordering pie ala mode, we pull out our Bibles and notes and discuss the most recent Sunday sermons from JF Believers.  This is a great time to discuss how the sermons impact our lives and what we are personally taking away from them…

Govin's Meats

On the third Sunday of the month, we have a members group making their way through a book on “Discipling” by Mark Devers. Each time we meet, we read a chapter and discuss how we can implementing the discipling techniques we are learning.  A lot of discipling can be incorporated into our day to day lives as Christian brothers and sisters.

WHATS UP NEXT…

Next month we are hosting our annual winter retreat!  The focus of this year’s retreat is “Holiness – The Awe of God”.  Using R. C. Sproul’s classic work, we will explore the mystery of the holiness of God, discover its unique place in the Christian life, and paint an awe-inspiring vision of God.  The cost is $75 per person.  This includes lodging for the weekend, food, and a book to take home.  If interested, ask about registration and information at JF Believers.  We have plenty of room at the Retreat Center and guests are welcome…

COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE…

We are a friendly group of men and women marked by joy, laughter, prayers for one another, and a desire to press on toward the upward call of Christ.  If your an adult single looking for brothers and sisters, we’d love to welcome you to our group. We meet at 1:30pm on Sunday afternoons in Gathering Room 2 at JF Believers before heading out to our local activities.  You can meet us there or email us at kindred@jfbelievers.com for more info…

Greetings

For those who don’t know, the Kindred Fellowship at JFBelievers is a group of ~20 singles ranging from young professionals to retired nature enthusiasts.  We refer to ourselves as Kindred because, despite our diversity in age and background, we all find a common bond in our love for Christ and His church.  Each week we have a good number show up to our activities who are regulars, a few who come when they can, the occasional missionary home on furlough, and a visitor or two who is always welcome!

What we’re doing

As of late, we’ve been working through a “Promised Land” handout, which asks some tough questions about living a life of faith and obedience.  Some of the questions include “What would it look like to be obedient to God in the next year?  What would you do differently?  How would it affect your relationship with God?  How would it affect your relationships, vocation, calling, finances, etc.?  What would it look like to walk in faith with God for five years?  What would that look like in a practical sense?  How can you be prepared to respond?  What might your life look like in five years if you did?  At the end of your life looking back, what would a life of obedience and faith look like?  What fruit would remain?  What testimony would you leave for future generations?”  All of these questions are being looked at in the light of verses such as Joshua 24:14-15, Proverbs 3:5-6, Romans 12:1-2, Jeremiah 29:10-14, Psalm 39:4.  All of us have been challenged in these discussions and will continue to be as we work out God’s plan for our lives over the next year… 5 years… and lifetime together.

kindred camping

We were also blessed with gorgeous camping weather during our Kindred camp out on July 6th – 7th. In addition, we had dinner and group discussion around the fire Friday night (with Laura joining us on Whats App from the Philippines).  Then we shot off a massive amount of fireworks (thanks Chad and Tony) and stayed up way too late getting silly.  The next morning we had breakfast and group devotions, followed by a beautiful tube ride down the Red Cedar, chasing two balled eagles most of the way, until we reached Camp Damro…

Who is Kindred?

Kindred is defined as one’s family and relations, similar in kind, related.  That is what we seek to be as the Kindred Adults group at JF Believers Church.  We are a growing group of more than twenty five single adults who are looking beyond our singleness, to the family we have been given in the church.  We all have spiritual brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers all within the household of God.  As scripture states, “encourage older men as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity” (1 Tim 5:1).  And we all have a role to play in the family of God.  Titus teaches the character that accords with sound doctrine in these various roles, including being self-controlled, steadfast, reverent in behavior, not slanderers, pure, kind, and so on (Titus 2).  As our group grows in number, we also seek to grow in the character that accords with sound doctrine.  None of us have arrived and all of us have room to grow.  And growing up in the family is our aim as the Kindred Adults at JFBelievers.christmas lights

What We’ve Been Doing

Last December, we held a Kindred Retreat at Luther Park in Chetek.  We read various portions of the book “They Were Single Too”, written by a single pastor in his 40’s.  For some sessions we split into small groups with multiple men’s and women’s groups .  This created great discussion, both in small groups and in the large group, where we reflecting on how various single characters in the bible could be examples for us, including Paul, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Martha, Anna, and others.  Also, we were able to share from our own experiences of being single either our entire life, or since being widowed, or in the midst of being divorce or separated.  We even got to Skype in with Laura, a single missionary, for a couple sessions from the Philippines.  We were truly blessed throughout the weekend.

Weekly Gathering

We’ve also really been focused on getting together on Sunday afternoons to pray for each other and recap the Sunday Sermons from JF Believers.  We break into small groups with our notes and questions at least twice a month.  This is a priority for our group and will be a main stay going forward.  One of the problems with those of us who have been Christians for a long time is that we can easily slip into going through the motions.  By asking each other pointed questions and sharing how the scriptures are practically affecting our lives, we hope to mitigate that trap.

Learning

Our Kindred members group is also going through a book called “Discipling” by Mark Dever.  We do this over pizza in the community on Friday nights once a month.  Its there we get to talk about how we are being discipled, while we are discipling others.  We are answering questions like what is discipling? Where is it done?  How is it done?  We really look forward to these times and it provides a healthy challenge to us all.

Fellowship

Lastly, we like to simply enjoy each others company as brothers and sisters in fellowship.  On the first Sunday of the month we do something that is just for laughs and good times.  In February we hosted a Super Bowl Party with all the typical tail gate goodies.  In March we took over the Coffeehouse and played board games.  We also look forward to these times going forward and can’t wait to get out into the spring weather.

game time

All of these activities are designed to promote a healthy family.  We want Kindred to not just be our title, but our description as we come together in the household of God.  Please pray for us as we continue to grow as spiritual brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers with you all at JFBelievers church.
